The CAS/SOA Exam Pathway

Becoming a credentialed P&C actuary in North America runs through the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) exam pathway to Associateship (ACAS) and Fellowship (FCAS); the Society of Actuaries (SOA) runs a parallel pathway more oriented to life, health, and retirement practice, with substantial overlap at the preliminary level. The Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation is a related but distinct professional credential, insurance-focused rather than actuarial, with no exam overlap but complementary subject matter.
The CAS exam sequence
The path to FCAS runs through preliminary exams shared with the SOA, followed by CAS-specific upper-level exams:

Passing Exams 1/P through MAS-II plus VEE credit earns Associateship (ACAS) once Exams 5, 6, and 7 are also completed; passing Exams 8 and 9 in addition to completing the professionalism requirements earns Fellowship (FCAS).
SOA equivalents
The SOA shares Exams P and FM directly with the CAS, then diverges into its own preliminary and fellowship structure oriented toward life, health, retirement, and general insurance practice areas (SOA does also offer a General Insurance track). Rough correspondence:

A candidate targeting P&C reserving and ratemaking work in the U.S. or Canada should pursue the CAS pathway; the SOA's General Insurance track exists but is far less common for P&C practitioners than the ACAS/FCAS route.
CPCU
The CPCU designation, administered by The Institutes, is an insurance (not actuarial) credential covering underwriting, claims, risk management, insurance law, and ethics across roughly eight exams. It has no actuarial exam overlap and does not substitute for any CAS/SOA credit, but many actuaries working closely with underwriting or claims pursue it as a complementary designation to deepen operational and legal fluency — the syllabus is a useful cross-reference for the "tailoring to underwriting/claims" communication skill discussed elsewhere in this library.
Syllabus themes per exam
- Exam 1/P — probability distributions, moment generating functions, order statistics; pure mathematics, no insurance context.
- Exam 2/FM — time value of money, annuities, bonds, immunization, derivatives (forwards/options basics).
- MAS-I — statistics fundamentals, GLMs, time series, credibility (Bühlmann, Bayesian).
- MAS-II — Bayesian analysis, MCMC concepts, more advanced credibility, simulation, decision theory.
- Exam 5 — basic ratemaking (loss ratio/pure premium methods, trend, on-leveling) and basic reserving (development triangles, chain ladder, BF).
- Exam 6 — U.S. or Canadian insurance regulation, statutory accounting, ratemaking law, reinsurance accounting.
- Exam 7 — advanced reserving (stochastic methods, Mack, bootstrap), risk transfer, capital modeling, ERM.
- Exam 8 — advanced ratemaking (multivariate/GLM pricing, classification ratemaking, excess/deductible ratemaking).
- Exam 9 — financial risk, investment theory applied to insurers, risk-adjusted return, reinsurance pricing.
Study strategy and spaced repetition
A widely used rule of thumb for upper-level CAS exams is roughly
so a typical 5-credit-hour upper-level exam implies on the order of 400–500 hours across a study season — though this varies significantly by candidate background.
Spaced repetition is well suited to actuarial exam prep because much of the material is formula- and procedure-heavy rather than purely conceptual. The underlying idea draws on the forgetting curve,
where is retention probability at time after last review and is a memory-strength parameter that grows each time material is successfully recalled — practically, this means reviewing a topic just as you are about to forget it (not immediately after learning it, and not so late that you have fully forgotten it) is more efficient than either cramming or one-and-done reading. A simple spaced-repetition scheduler increases the interval between reviews by a growth factor after each successful recall,
so early review intervals might run 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, then stretch to several weeks as a topic is repeatedly recalled correctly, with wrong answers resetting the interval back down.
Practical application to CAS exams:
- Build a flashcard deck of every formula and its assumptions (not just the formula, but when it applies — e.g., volume-weighted vs. simple average development factors).
- Interleave topics rather than mastering one syllabus reading fully before moving to the next — mixed practice better matches the exam's mixed-topic format.
- Do full-length timed mock exams under real time pressure at least 3–4 times before sitting, since upper-level CAS exams are notoriously time-constrained relative to their content depth.
- Review wrong answers with a "why" note, not just the correct number — was it a formula error, a misread question, or a conceptual gap — and feed that note back into the spaced-repetition deck.

Pitfalls
- Treating VEE and OC/DISC as afterthoughts — they are graduation requirements, and delaying them can hold up an ACAS/FCAS designation even after all exams are passed.
- Studying preliminary exams (1/P, 2/FM) in isolation from insurance context, then struggling to connect theory to practice at Exam 5.
- Under-practicing time management — CAS upper-level exams are frequently failed on pacing, not knowledge, because written-answer questions reward concise, complete answers over long ones.
- Assuming CPCU coursework substitutes for actuarial exam credit — it does not, on either the CAS or SOA pathway.
